Ingredients
Scale
- 3 lb (1400g) apples (fuji, gala, honeycrisp, red delicious or similar)
- ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
- ½ cup (100g) packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Slice and core the apples into small chunks, peeling if desired.
- Add the chopped apples to a 7qt slow cooker, then sprinkle with both sugars and cinnamon. Toss everything together.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 3-5 hours, stirring after 2 hours, until the apples are translucent, which usually takes about 4 hours.
- Blend the apples along with their juices using a hand blender until smooth. If using a regular blender, blend in batches, ensuring to leave the lid slightly ajar to let steam escape.
- Return the blended mixture to the slow cooker and continue to cook on high with the lid slightly open for an additional 30 minutes to an hour, or until it reaches your desired thickness.
- Stir in the salt and vanilla, let it cool, and then transfer to jars or freezer containers. If canning, follow appropriate guidance; otherwise, store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
Feel free to adjust the sweetness by altering the amount of granulated or brown sugar as desired.
For a spice variation, try adding nutmeg or allspice along with the cinnamon to enhance the flavor.
Ensure that you monitor the apple butter towards the end of cooking to prevent it from getting too thick.
