Ingredients
Scale
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups 2% milk
- 3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic, or garlic powder
- 1–2 tablespoons buffalo hot sauce
- 1 lb. cooked noodles
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the unsalted butter over medium-high heat and whisk in flour until smooth, creating a roux.
- Gradually add the milk, whisking to avoid lumps. Cook for 4-6 minutes until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- Remove the pot from heat and gradually add the shredded cheddar cheese, whisking until melted and smooth.
- Stir in garlic, hot sauce, and salt to taste. Adjust seasoning as needed. If sauce is too thick, add warm milk to adjust consistency.
- Toss the warm cheese sauce with the cooked noodles immediately for an even coating. Serve hot.
Notes
For a spicier kick, adjust the amount of buffalo sauce to your taste.
Ensure cheese is added off the heat to prevent graininess in the sauce.
This sauce can also be used as a dip for veggies or as a topping for nachos.
