Ingredients
Scale
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 8 ounces Crisco
- 1/2 cup water, cold
- 12 medium apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup light brown sugar
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 tablespoons butter, cut into small cubes
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Incorporate Crisco using fingers until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add cold water in the center.
- Gently combine the ingredients until moist. Divide dough into two pieces, form discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Roll out one disc on a floured surface until about 1/4" thick, large enough for the pie plate. Place it in a 9" pie plate and set aside.
- Roll the second disc into a 1/4" thick circle, then cut into 3/4" strips. Chill the strips on a tray while preparing the filling.
Notes
Ensure the apples are fresh for the best flavor.
Let the pie cool before serving for optimal texture.
You can use a mix of apples for a more complex flavor.
